Intention | 5 Leaderships Lessons from a 10 Day Silent Retreat

I recently completed a challenging 10-day silent meditation retreat. Sitting for 13 hours a day, enduring physical discomfort, wrestling with constant mind chatter, and facing moments of doubt and frustration was far from easy. Yet, as one of the teachers reminded me, the most important thing wasn’t perfection—it was the intention behind coming. My intention was to self-examine, develop awareness, confront my ego, and deepen my care and compassion for others.

This intention is the source of greater freedom from anxiety and increased love and generosity. It’s our intentions that shape our experiences, relationships, careers, creativity, and life paths. The Buddhist teachings I encountered beautifully align with 4D’s concept of intention. Your impact as a leader or human being doesn’t begin with what you do or say—it starts with why you do and say it. For example, the same action—cutting open a person’s stomach—can come from very different intentions: a mugger aims to harm, while a surgeon aims to heal. The intention behind the action makes all the difference.

Most of us live on autopilot, caught in repetitive, unconscious reactions and beliefs—even when they cause us pain. The Buddhist term Saṅkhāra captures this unintentional way of living, referring to conditioned mental reactions and habits. Vipassana meditation helps us become aware of these patterns, so we can break free from them. Observing our unconscious thoughts and reactions allows us to see the suffering they cause and begin to choose differently.

Becoming a 4D Human Being: Awareness and Choice

Like Vipassana meditation, 4D coaching and training aim to raise awareness and intention. The idea of 4D refers to four dimensions of being: physical, emotional, intellectual, and the crucial fourth dimension—intentionality. The first three are our actions, feelings, and thoughts. The fourth dimension is about being awake and conscious of our intentions behind those actions and words.

Becoming a 4D human being means breaking free from conditioned patterns—the Saṅkhāras—and painful reactivity. It means living consciously and making choices (#AtChoice) in every moment. This awareness not only makes you a better leader but also a happier, more compassionate, creative, and vital human being.
