As a leader, colleague, partner, friend, and human being, you are always making an impact—whether you realize it or not. During a recent 10-day silent meditation retreat, I experienced this truth in a new and powerful way.
On day zero, around 4 pm, I arrived feeling a mix of anxiety and curiosity. After settling into my simple but comfortable room, I shared a vegan meal with a few fellow female attendees. Then the rules were set: no mobile phones, no books or notes, no eye contact, no talking—and the silence began.
Despite the complete absence of words and looks, we all quickly adapted and still impacted each other profoundly. Whether sitting across from someone at lunch, standing beside someone at the sink, noticing a passerby in the garden, or sensing a shift on the meditation mat next to you—impact was constant and palpable. It reminded me of what we often tell participants in 4D courses: “On the catwalk of leadership, you are always on display.” Even when you think no one is watching or listening, you are making an impact every minute of every day.
How to Dial Up Your Positive Impact
Knowing that you are always visible offers a powerful opportunity. Every moment presents a chance to create a positive, memorable, and meaningful influence—even with people you don’t speak to or may never meet.
Here’s a simple way to amplify that impact: dedicate one day to dialing up ‘Connection’ with those around you. Make more eye contact and give your full attention to people—even if only for a few seconds. This small act of presence creates an instant boost in charisma and connection. Notice how focusing on this one quality can transform your interactions and the energy you bring to every space.
“There’s no greater gift than thinking that you had some impact on the world, for the better.”
— Gloria Steinem
