Relationship and Leadership Lessons from a 10 Day Silent Retreat

Whether times are good, bad or somewhere in between, it can be really important to take some time out and get some perspective. Creating some space gives us a chance to take a look at ourselves, our relationships, our communication and our impact. Because all of us get stuck in unhelpful patterns right? And this is even more true when we are under pressure and overwhelmed.

At 4DHumanBeing we don’t just talk about personal growth, leadership and communication – and we don’t just deliver training & development – we live and breathe it right with you. All with the goal of helping ourselves and you become increasingly ‘intentional’ as 4D HumanBeings and live our best lives – at work and at home.

In the spirit of walking the walk, I recently went on a 10-day silent meditation retreat. An opportunity to spend an extended period really focussing on all those mind/body processes and patterns. Habits that in the best times can run our lives on autopilot and in the worst times can really keep us stuck and unhappy!

The retreat consisted of 10 days of not talking or making eye contact with any other attendees, getting up at 4am and spending around 13 hours a day in a large hall learning and practicing Vipassana meditation. Vipassana meditation is a technique where you learn to objectively observe the breath and body sensations, so as to calm the mind and recognise that rather than reacting to things as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, what we experience and what we are, is simply a flow of constant change. A great thing to remember when we find ourselves in a challenging life-change is that this change will also soon change. Nothing lasts forever. It’s all movement!

Just like many things we do in life, work and leadership, this 10-day silent meditation retreat wasn’t easy! AND…there were so many wonderful lessons and reminders about how we can continue to develop our relationship, leadership and communication skills for a much happier, healthier, peaceful and even joyful way of living and working – for us and for everyone around us!

Whilst you may at some point choose to go on your own meditation course, in the meantime I am delighted to share with you some wonderful lessons in 4D Relationship and Leadership from my own 10-day silent retreat.
